If you're in the metal finishing industry, you know that the chemistry you use is just as important as the parts you plate. But as the global market becomes more interconnected, so do chemical regulations. Two of the most impactful regulations originating from the European Union, REACH and RoHS, have far-reaching effects that can directly impact your plating line—no matter where you are located.

Navigating REACH compliance is crucial for maintaining access to the European market. Let's break down what these regulations mean and how they affect your choice of finishing chemistry.

What is REACH and Who Does it Affect?

REACH stands for Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals. It's a comprehensive EU regulation that manages the risks posed by chemical substances.

While REACH primarily impacts plating shops operating within the EU, its influence extends globally. A critical part of REACH compliance involves the regulation of finished goods that are imported into the EU. This means that if your plated parts, or the products they go into, are destined for Europe, the chemistry used to finish them matters.

Understanding Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC)

A key component of REACH is its list of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC). These are chemicals with hazardous properties that are subject to strict regulation. Crucially, SVHCs have import restrictions even when present in a finished product.

A prime example for the plating industry is cobalt salts.

  • Cobalt salts are classified as an SVHC.

  • Because of this, many common finishes containing cobalt, like certain trivalent-chromium-based passivates, have been largely eliminated from EU-based markets.

  • If your plating line uses a cobalt-based passivate and your parts are headed to the EU, you could face significant market access issues.

What About RoHS?

Distinct from REACH, the RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) directive is another EU regulation with a major impact. RoHS specifically applies to any products for the electronics industry and many general electrical products sold in the EU.

Its function is straightforward: it restricts the use of specific hazardous materials.

  • Currently, 10 substances are controlled under RoHS, with strict limitations on their concentration in finished goods.

  • For the plating industry, the most relevant of these is hexavalent chromium. This is especially critical for chromates and passivates, which often contain some amount of hexavalent chromium within the protective film.

Why REACH and RoHS Matter to Your Global Supply Chain

The message is clear: if your business or your clients' business involves exporting to the European Union, your choice of plating chemistry is a matter of REACH compliance and RoHS adherence.

  • Global Market Access: Using non-compliant chemistries can result in your products being barred from one of the world's largest markets.

  • Supply Chain Responsibility: Your customers may require you to provide documentation proving that your finishes are compliant with these regulations.

  • Future-Proofing: Global chemical regulations are constantly evolving. Partnering with a supplier who is ahead of these changes can protect you from future disruptions.
